Elsie Effah Kaufmann is a prominent Ghanaian academic, an Associate Professor and founding Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Ghana.

The annual Ghana National Science and Mathematics Quiz is hosted by Elsie Effah Kaufmann, whose predecessors include Marian Ewurama Addy from 1993 to 2000 and Eureka Emefa Adomako from 2001 to 2005.

Education

Growing up she was made to study hard under the strict guidance of her parents who were both teachers.

Kaufmann earned her IB Diploma in 1988 from United World College of the Atlantic in Wales after completing her secondary education at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School.

She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE), a Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.

Career

After completing her graduate studies, Elsie Effah Kaufmann received postdoctoral training at Rutgers University in New Jersey, United States of America, between May 1998 and June 2001; after working as a Teaching Assistant at the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania, United States of America.

In 2006, she became the first head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and served as head for a number of years (2006-2012, 2014-2016).

Prof. Effah Kaufmann was a member of the Planning Committee set up by the Academic Board of the University of Ghana to make proposals for establishing the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and was also a member of the three-person Implementation Committee set up by the Vice Chancellor following the submission and adoption of the Planning Committee’s report.

She was appointed as a member of the highest decision-making body of the University of Ghana, the University Council, in 2010, and served in that capacity for four years.

Prof. Effah Kaufmann was awarded the prestigious International Women’s Forum Leadership Foundation Fellowship in 2011.

She is also keenly interested in Science education at all levels and has been the Host/ Quiz Mistress of the Ghana National Science & Mathematics Quiz TV Programme since 2006.

In 2006, Elsie Kaufmann took over hosting the National Science and Maths quiz show from Marian Ewurama Addy, who been hosting it from 1993 to 2000, and Eureka Emefa Adomako, who hosted from 2001 to 2005.

Prof. Effah Kaufmann is a Board member of the African Gifted Foundation Ghana (African Science Academy) and the British International School-Ghana.

She is the current President of the Ghana Society of Biomedical Engineers.

Relationship Status

Dr. Elsie is a divorcee mother of 3 children. She however keeps her husband’s name for the sake of Academic records and identification.
