Jamaican YouTuber/stylist Great Mari has taken a jab at Africa’s self-acclaimed dancehall king, Shatta Wale as not being authentic.
In an episode of ‘vibes & lyrics’ posted on YouTube, the YouTuber while been introduced to African dancehall commented on Shatta Wales’s Gringo song as “good but definitely not authentic.”
The Jamaican-born US-based stylist was a guest on ‘vibes & lyrics’, an afrobeat entertainment program where she was been introduced to African dancehall.
The host, Kobby Split, introduced her to African dancehall by playing Burna Boy’s heaven gate, Shatta Wales’ gringo, Patoranking’s much different, Stonebwoys and Jupita’s “Money Box”.
Out of all five songs, Great Mari selected Stonebwoy’s More as her favorite and Patoranking’s Suh different as the most groovy. She asserted Stonebwoy as authentic and very genuine with his patois but Shatta wale and Jupita’s as a learned
“I know the vocabulary” type of patois.
Been the first time hearing songs from all five artistes, the St Thomas native said she had never heard of these artistes except Burna boy in Jamaica. She said
in Jamaica, we only know of the popular African artistes, Davido, Burnaboy, Wizkid. You only hear of the very popular afrobeat songs. I have never heard any of these Artistes”.
She was however impressed with the sounds she heard and pledged to listen often and spread the songs to her fellow Jamaicans.
