Hollywood Actor Idris Elba is one of the celebrities who was named in a letter that suggested Ghana look into the legalization of (LGBTQ+) few days ago.
Many stated that the actor has added his voice to the ongoing debate of legalizing Lesbian, Gay, Bisezual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) rights in Ghana.
According to the Hollywood A-list actor, Ghana accepting and legalizing the rights of LGBTQ+ will far help to make Ghana greater and stronger on the continent of Africa and to an extent the world at large.
The British, English, Sierra Leonean citizen who is also found to be visiting Ghana on normal routine has added his name to 67 UK celebrities with Ghanaian roots as they wrote a letter expressing solidarity with Ghana’s LGBT community.
In the recent happenings amidst the strive against the Covid-19 pandemic, a wave of LGBTQ+ community has risen setting up offices across the regional capitals especially in Accra. They have also requested from the Ghana government to review and amend the country’s constitution and give them their right to practice their sexual interest in the country.
Some few Ghanaians including known celebrities have publically expressed their support to the marginalized group.
However, a large part of the people of Ghana has caustioned the government to not attempt to legalizing LGBTQ+ in the country.
The 67 UK celebrities, therefore, have penned down a solidarity letter to the LGBTQ+ in Ghana.
Part of their letter read
“We have watched with profound concern as you have had to question the safety of your vital work at the LGBT+ Rights Ghana Centre in Accra, and feared for your personal wellbeing and security. It is unacceptable to us that you feel unsafe
As prominent and powerful advocates for this great country, we are beseeching His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and political/cultural leaders to create a pathway for allyship, protection and support. We petition for inclusivity which will make the nation even greater and even stronger.”
