Cuba Gooding Jr settles r@pe lawsuit ahead of civil trial
Actor Cuba Gooding Jr. reached a settlement with a woman who claimed he raped her in a hotel room in New York City in 2013.
It happened just as jury selection was about to start in a federal civil trial where he was expected to face devastating testimony.
The 55-year-old Oscar winner has refuted the charge and insisted that all of his interactions with the woman were consensual.
Numerous women have accused him of groping and inappropriate touching.
The settlement’s details have not been made public.
Mr. Gooding admitted guilt to kissing a woman against her will last year.
In that case, a plea deal with prosecutors resulted in accusations against three other accusers being dropped, sparing him either jail or a criminal record. He had to go through alcohol and behavior counseling for six months.
But in this legal action in Manhattan, the testimony of those three women—who allege that the actor mistreated them between 2009 and 2019—was scheduled to be heard.
The now-resolved legal action was brought in 2020 on behalf of a lady only known as Jane Doe. Injuries were sought for $6 million (£4.8 million).
She said that Mr. Gooding met her in the summer of 2013 at a nearby restaurant and invited her to drinks at the Soho hotel where he was staying, The Mercer.
She alleged that the actor informed her that he needed to change at the hotel, invited her to his fifth-floor room, and then started to undress.

The woman claimed that as she attempted to leave, Mr. Gooding obstructed her way, pulled her onto the bed, “wouldn’t stop” touching her, “aggressively removed” her panties, and twice penetrated her.
The claims were described as “completely false and defamatory” at the time by the defendant’s attorney.
Last Monday, the presiding judge decided that three more of Mr. Gooding’s accusers may testify because their claims were “sufficiently similar” to the plaintiff’s claim.
The prior plea agreement for Mr. Gooding, according to one lady, Kelsey Harbert, was “more disappointing than words can say,” she claimed last year.
The trial’s jury selection was supposed to start on Tuesday at 10:00 EDT, but neither Mr. Gooding nor the attorneys on either side showed up.
