About EEDC
One of the 18 businesses that emerged from Power Holding Corporation of Nigeria Plc as a result of the ongoing reform of the power sector is Enugu Electricity Distribution Company.
It belongs to Nigeria’s eleven electricity distribution companies. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission issued an operational license to the Firm in 2006. (NERC).
In addition to one undertaking, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company has 18 Business Units.
It is responsible for the five (5) states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo State, which are located in the South East geopolitical zone.
The first 30KW generating plant was erected in the city of Lagos in 1898, marking the beginning of Nigeria’s development of electric power.
The pattern of electricity development was informed by individual electricity undertakings set up in various towns somewhere by Native or Municipal authorities from this era forward and till 1950.
In order to take over the duties for electricity in Lagos State, the Nigerian Government Electricity Undertaking was founded within the erstwhile Public Works Development (PWD) in 1946.
In order to effectively integrate power development, the government passed the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria Ordinance No.1 of 1950 in 1950.
With the use of this ordinance, PWD’s electrical division and all other power projects were brought under supervision.
The Electricity Corporation of Nigeria (ECN) was then made the statutory entity in charge of producing, distributing, and selling electricity to all Nigerian consumers.
The Niger Dams Authority was created by a Parliamentary Act in 1962. The Authority was in charge of building and maintaining dams and other projects on the river Niger and elsewhere, generating power through water use, enhancing navigation, and promoting irrigation and fisheries.
By decree No. 24 of 1972, the Electricity Company of Nigeria (ECN) and the Niger Dams Authority (NDA) amalgamated to form the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA).
The Authority was tasked with creating and sustaining an effective, coordinated, and cost-effective system of energy delivery for the entire Federation.
The Authority produces electricity primarily from two hydro and thermal sources.
The hydropower plants are Jebba Hydropower Plant, with a capacity of 578.4MW, Kainji Hydropower Plant, with a capacity of 760MW, and Shiroro Hydropower Plant, with a capacity of 600MW.
Afam Thermal Power Station, with 696MW, Lagos Thermal Power Station, Delta IV Thermal Power Station, with 600MW, and Sapele Thermal Power Station, with 1020MW, are the thermal power stations.
However, NEPA had to become the Power Holding Corporation of Nigeria (PHCN) in 2004 due to the need to reform the electricity sector.
The PHCN was divided into 11 distribution businesses, 1 transmission company, and 6 generation firms under the Electricity Reform Act of 2005. Enugu Electricity Distribution Company was established as a result of this Reform Act (EEDC).
