Fact check: ‘Sekx Championship’ in Sweden not true

The internet recently buzzed with the bizarre claim that Sweden had declared sekx a sport and was organizing a tournament. International media fell for the gag and reported it as truth. DW delves deep into the issue.

The Times of India, one of India’s most well-known and renowned publications, has a headline on its website that says, “Sweden Will Soon Host the European Sekx Championship.”

The article claims that Sweden has recognized sekx as a sport and will hold a competition where participants would have daily interactions lasting up to six hours to see who is the greatest at it.
According to reports, the competition was supposed to start in the city of Gothenburg on June 8.

The assertion has also been made by other mainstream media outlets and their social media channels. The Swedish sports organization, however, has refuted the existence of any such event.

The story was also carried out by a few Pakistani websites. Even the involvement of Greek competitors in the competition was reported on this Greek portal. A Nigerian website and the prominent South African media outlet IOL both covered the story.

The well-known German media outlet RTL polled people for a report on the contest, asking them: “What do you think about recognizing sekx as a sport?”

Is the tale authentic, though? Let’s examine it more closely.

The first-ever sekx competition will be held in Sweden this week as a result of the country’s official recognition of sekx as a sport.

Fact check: False

“All this information is false,” Anna Setzman, spokesperson for the Swedish Sports Confederation, said in a written statement from Stockholm to DW. “Right now, false information is being spread in some international media about Sweden and Swedish sports,” she added. “These are vigorously denied.”

How did it all start?

One of the biggest Swedish-language newspapers, Göteborgs-Posten, alleged that a Swedish man named Dragan Bratic was responsible for the entire scenario.

The publication claims that Bratic, who owns a number of strip clubs, wished for sekx to be recognized as a sport. In January of this year, he submitted an application to join the confederation.

The Swedish Sports Confederation informed DW that a person claimed to be a member of a sekx federation and submitted an application for membership; however, the application was turned down in May.

“The Swedish Sports Confederation has drawn attention to the fact that in some parts of the international media, the news is currently being spread that a sekx federation has become a member of the Swedish Sports Confederation,” Setzman said in the statement. “It is false information with the aim of smearing Swedish sports and Sweden.”

A reputable Indian media outlet connected to CNBC also disseminated “details” about how to take part in the event, including providing an email address linked to a “Swedish Sekx Federation.” It’s interesting to note that there is a website with that name, but it sent users to a porn site with a different URL that is currently displaying a countdown to the “tournament” and asserts to be live streaming the event.

A partnership with a sekx group was flatly denied by the confederation. “There is no sekx federation that is a member of the Swedish Sports Confederation,” stated Setzman.

The so-called sekx federation stated, “It’s a shame that SSF (Swedish Sekx Federation) was not helped by the 2 billion Swedish kronor allocated (by the Swedish government) to registered sports organizations.” Bratic declared that they will still hold a sekx championship despite not being acknowledged. His group allegedly stated in a written statement to DW that “the Swedish Sekx Federation finances the entire European Championship with its own funds and with its own voluntary work.”
