After West Ham’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool, David Moyes expressed anger towards the officials for denying his team a late penalty.
He stated that “VAR disrespected us.” West Ham believed that they deserved a penalty when Thiago’s arm made contact with the ball as he fell in the penalty area.
Despite a VAR check, the penalty was not given, and opinions were divided on whether it should have been awarded.
This decision left Moyes frustrated and contributed to Liverpool’s 11th win in 13 meetings with West Ham, maintaining their recent success.
The FA rulebook’s Law 12 states that a player’s actions are not considered illegal if they are a “consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation.”
Moyes said: “You’ll probably hear them come out with some rubbish about, he needed to break his fall. Well if you lunge at the ball it’s your own fault for lunging and being out of control in the tackle. You can break your fall by sliding and having to put your arm down.
“Whoever it was chose not to send the referee to look at it. VAR would have said ‘you should go check this out’
“So VAR showed no respect whatsoever to us for this could be close and worth a call.”
When asked if understands the rule, Moyes added: “I think I do quite well, yeah.
Klopp: We’re not in the race…yet
With a third consecutive victory, Liverpool climbed to sixth place in the Premier League table, closing the gap on the teams occupying Champions League qualification spots to a mere six points.
However, Manchester United and Newcastle still have matches in hand. When asked about the prospects of a top-four finish, Klopp replied.
“I can’t see the race yet,” said Klopp. “We’re not in a position for a race. The only thing we can do is win football games. If that puts pressure on other teams, we don’t play them [apart from Tottenham].
