South Africa: Johannesburg gets first snowfall after 12 years
In South Africa, Johannesburg’s residents woke up to snowfall on Monday, as the city and other high-lying parts of South Africa were hit by a cold front.
The weather services warned of potential road closures and dangerously cold temperatures. The snowfall in Gauteng province was caused by the cold front, which reached South Africa late last week, morphing into a weather system known as a “cut-off low”.
Such weather is not completely unheard of in Johannesburg, which lies at an altitude of more than 1,700 meters, yet it is still rare. The last times’ snowfall was seen were in 2012 and 1996.
After getting her picture taken on Nelson Mandela Square in the financial district, Jennifer Banda told the Reuters news agency that she was pregnant the last time it snowed.

The snow and cold front were extended to other regions, including the mountainous areas of Drakensburg, Eastern Cape and neighboring Lesotho.
Amid the excitement, the weather service warned that the “disruptive snow” could pose possible hazards, including hypothermia, “if care is not taken.”
South Africa’s Department of Transport urged commuters, especially those in KwaZulu-Natal, to exercise “extra caution” on the roads due to the “heavy snowfalls.”
Many South Africans, however, continue to be mesmerized by the transformation of parts of the country into a winter wonderland.
