Why did Roger Waters quit Pink Floyd?

George Roger Waters is an English musician, singer-songwriter and composer. In 1965, he co-founded the progressive rock band Pink Floyd as its bassist.

Following the departure of singer-songwriter Syd Barrett in 1968, Waters also became the band’s lyricist, co-lead vocalist and conceptual leader until his departure in 1985.

With the concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979), and The Final Cut (1983), Pink Floyd found popularity on a global scale. They were one of the most critically acclaimed and financially successful bands in popular music by the early 1980s. In 1985, Waters quit the band due to artistic disagreements and a legal battle over the use of the band’s name and material followed.

1987 saw an out-of-court settlement. The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking (1984), Radio K.A.O.S. (1987), Amused to Death (1992), and Is This the Life We Really Want? (2017) are among the solo albums by Roger Waters. He published an Ira, an opera that he had translated from the libretto by Étienne and Nadine Roda-Gils, in 2005.

With 450,000 attendees, Waters’ 1990 The Wall – Live in Berlin concert was one of the biggest rock events in history. He was admitted to the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the US Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a member of Pink Floyd. Later that year, he made his first performance with Pink Floyd since 1981 at the Live 8 global awareness concert.

He has performed The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety during his world tour from 2006 to 2008, and the Wall Live tour from 2010 to 2013 was the highest-grossing solo artist tour at the time. He has performed as a solo act extensively since 1999.

In his writing, Waters often uses political themes, and controversy has erupted over his opinions, particularly those regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He has called for the demolition of the Israeli West Bank Barrier, referred to Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians as apartheid, and endorsed the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement.

In 1985, due to artistic disagreements, Waters split from Pink Floyd and started a legal dispute with the group over their ongoing use of the band’s name and content. Waters contacted EMI and CBS in December 1985 to make advantage of the “Leaving Member” provision in his contract. He began High Court procedures to formally dissolve the Pink Floyd partnership in October 1986.

He referred to Pink Floyd as a “spent force creatively” in his submission before the High Court. Gilmour and Mason declared their determination to keep Pink Floyd together while opposing the application. Waters said that he had been forced to resign, just like Barrett had been years before, and that he made the decision to leave Pink Floyd due to legal considerations because, if he hadn’t, the consequences would have financially destroyed him.

Israel’s treatment has been likened to Nazi Germany by Waters. His accusation of antisemitism, which he denied, was politically driven and confused with anti-Zionism.

Waters acknowledged that the time leading up to his departure had been a “poor, terrible moment” and expressed guilt for his role in it: “Why should I have forced my feelings about the work and what it was worth on the others if they didn’t feel the same?

I made a mistake by trying to achieve it. In 2013, Waters expressed sorrow for the litigation and admitted he had overlooked the fact that the Pink Floyd moniker had worth on the market apart from the band members.

In 1969, Waters wed Judith Trim, a school teacher and potter who had been his boyhood sweetheart. Although she was removed from CD reissues, she was depicted on the gatefold jacket of Pink Floyd’s Ummagumma’s initial release.

They got divorced in 1975 and never had kids. 2001 saw Trim’s passing. Waters wed Lady Carolyne Christie, the third Marquess of Zetland’s niece, in 1976. They had two children: India Waters, a model, and Harry Waters, a musician who has played keyboards with his father’s touring band since 2002. In 1992, Christie and Waters got divorced.
