Ghana’s sport journalist George Addo Jnr joins the BBC
After working for more than ten years in Ghana and other African countries, sports broadcast journalist George Addo Jr. joined the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
George has spent the previous 10 years working for Multimedia Group Limited, Ghana’s largest media conglomerate. He plans to use all of this knowledge to help the BBC maintain its position as the continent’s and the world’s top source for sports news.
After Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and Ibrahim Sannie Daara, George is the third sports journalist from Ghana to join the BBC and work there in the United Kingdom.
Since he was a student, George has had a deep interest in sports. He contributed significantly to the University of Ghana’s Sports for Development Program during his stay there and conducted an in-depth studies for the Ghana Universities Sports Association.
George advanced to the role of Chief of Sports at Radio Univers, the campus station, where he oversaw the strategic coverage of two events organized by the University of Ghana Sports Association, namely the West African Universities Games and the World University Games.
These enormous strides were not ignored, as his peers and the academic community later named him Student Reporter of the Year in 2013.
George transitioned to Joy FM with ease, and for nine years, he served as the radio station’s lead football pundit.
In this capacity, he provided top-notch analysis of numerous important athletic events, most notably five Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) competitions, two European football championships, five UEFA Champions League seasons, three FIFA World Cup tournaments, and seven Ghana Premier League seasons.
George was nominated three times for the PAV Ansah Communications Award under the prestigious EMY Africa Awards program and was named one of the best English commentators Ghana has ever produced by the venerable Mirror newspaper. His commentary on radio and television is crystal clear, distinct, and captivating.
He was authorized to broadcast 2016, 2017, and 2018 UEFA Champions League finals in succession.
In fact, Addo made some history for himself in 2021 when he provided commentary for Joy FM from Wembley for England vs. Italy Euro final.
He provided broadcast commentary for Joy Prime, which had exclusive TV rights to the games, during the same tournament.
George, a passionate storyteller, used his imagination to create outstanding documentaries and features on the Ghanaian league, which qualified him for a prize from the Ghana Premier League Board for his major promotion to the top division in 2013 and 2014.
The 2017 World Athletics Championships in London, the 2018 Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham, the 2018 Africa Athletics Championships in Asaba (Nigeria), the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, and the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon were the five major competitions he covered as Joy FM’s chief athletics reporter.

A variety of sports are covered by the BBC on UK television and radio, either live or in conjunction with popular analysis shows including Match of the Day, Test Match Special, Ski Sunday, Today at Wimbledon, and formerly Grandstand.
Moreover, results, analysis, and coverage are uploaded to the BBC Sport website and the interactive television program BBC Red Button.
The FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship are co-owned by the BBC and ITV.
Games from the group stage, knockout stage, semi-final, and championship game are distributed almost evenly between the two networks.
