Mark Zuckerberg returns to Twitter after 11 years

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched the new text-based social media app Threads on Thursday.

The cage fight between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk is on and no, it’s not on the ground. Meta has finally released its new text-based social media app called Threads, which is Zuckerberg’s direct response to Musk’s Twitter.

The app serves as a direct competitor to Elon Musk’s Twitter and is positioned as an “open and friendly public space for conversation.”

To announce the launch, Zuckerberg himself made the official announcement and even returned to Twitter after 11 years, taking a hilarious jab at Musk.

On Thursday, Zuckerberg tweeted for the first time since 2012, sharing a meme featuring Spiderman pointing at another Spiderman dressed in the same costume. The meme is derived from an image from the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon “Double Identity,” where a villain tries to impersonate the hero.

While Zuckerberg shared the meme without any accompanying text, its context was clear in relation to Twitter and its highly anticipated substitute, Threads. Notably, Zukerberg’s last post on Twitter was on January 18, 2012, urging people to call out in Congress to be ‘Pro Internet’.

However, he made a comeback on the microblogging site to announce the Threads app, just two weeks after Elon Musk challenged him to a cage fight.

Threads is a text-based messaging app that has been introduced as an “open and friendly public space for conversation.”

“Our vision is to take the best parts of Instagram and create a new experience for text, ideas, and discussing what’s on your mind. I believe the world needs this kind of friendly community, and I’m grateful to all of you who have been part of Threads from day one. Threads is now available in the app store,” said Zuckerberg.

Meta has launched Threads globally, including in India. The app can be downloaded for free from Google Play for Android devices and the Apple Store for iPhones. While Meta positions Threads as an extension of Instagram, it is important to note that it is a distinct platform with features similar to Twitter. Musk said the idea around Threads is to “take the best parts of Instagram and create a new experience”.

One notable feature is the ability for users to publish a series of interconnected posts, similar to Twitter threads. In an effort to attract Instagram users, verified accounts on Instagram will automatically receive a blue verification tick on Threads upon signing up.

Users can easily download the Threads app from either Google Play or the Apple App Store. Once downloaded, they can log in to Threads using their existing Instagram ID. If users are already logged in to their Instagram account, Threads will only request permission to access the necessary information including profile photo, bio and username, eliminating the need to re-enter login details.
