What did Tamara Curtis do? Nikolas Cruz’s lawyer set to be investigated
Tamara Curtis was a lawyer who represented Nikolas Cruz, the perpetrator of the Parkland school shooting in February 2018.
Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people and injuring 17 others.
After the shooting, Cruz was arrested and charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 counts of attempted murder. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and his case went to trial.
During the trial, Tamara Curtis was Cruz’s lead defense attorney. She argued that Cruz was not guilty by reason of insanity, claiming that he suffered from a severe mental illness and was unable to understand the consequences of his actions.
However, the prosecution presented evidence to counter Curtis’s argument, including a video that Cruz had recorded before the shooting in which he talked about his plans and motives.
In March 2019, Cruz’s trial ended with a verdict of guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Since then, there have been allegations that Tamara Curtis may have mishandled Cruz’s defense. In particular, there have been claims that she failed to properly investigate Cruz’s mental health and that she was unprepared for the trial.

In February 2021, the Florida Supreme Court ordered an investigation into Curtis’s conduct as Cruz’s lawyer. The court appointed a special master to conduct the investigation and make recommendations on whether disciplinary action should be taken against Curtis.
The investigation is ongoing, and it is not yet clear what its findings will be. However, some experts have weighed in on the case and offered their opinions on Curtis’s performance as Cruz’s lawyer.
One expert, David Weinstein, a former federal prosecutor who is now a defense attorney, told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that Curtis appeared to be “outmatched” during the trial.
“She didn’t have the level of experience or expertise that was needed for a case of this magnitude,” he said. “It was clear that she was struggling to keep up with the prosecution’s evidence and arguments.”
Another expert, Michael Seigel, a professor of law at the University of Florida, told the Sun-Sentinel that Curtis’s defense strategy was “flawed.”
“She put all her eggs in one basket by arguing that Cruz was insane,” he said. “That was a very difficult argument to make, given the evidence that was presented at trial.”
Seigel also criticized Curtis’s decision to put Cruz on the stand during the trial, saying that it may have backfired and made him look more culpable.
Despite these criticisms, some have defended Curtis’s performance as Cruz’s lawyer. Melisa McNeill, a defense attorney who worked with Curtis on the case, told the Sun-Sentinel that Curtis did the best she could under difficult circumstances.
“She was a zealous advocate for her client and did everything she could to try to get him a fair trial,” McNeill said. “There were a lot of challenges that came up during the case, and Tamara did her best to navigate them.”
Curtis herself has not commented on the investigation, and it is not clear what her response will be if the special master recommends disciplinary action.
In any case, the investigation highlights the high stakes of criminal defense work, particularly in cases as high-profile and emotionally charged as the Parkland shooting. Defense attorneys must balance their duty to their clients with the need to present a strong, coherent case in court, all while facing intense public scrutiny and criticism.
Whether or not Tamara Curtis is found to have committed any wrongdoing, her role in the Parkland shooting trial is likely to be remembered as a controversial and difficult chapter in her career as a lawyer.
