Stan Dogbe leads anti-flood taskforce on Aerial Surveillance of Accra
In a decisive move to address the perennial flooding crisis in Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama has constituted an Anti-Flood Taskforce to implement proactive measures ahead of the upcoming rainy season.
The task force, chaired by Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations) Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, has already begun aerial surveillance of Accra to assess flood-prone areas and strategize intervention plans. The initiative forms part of a broader national effort to mitigate the impact of flooding and improve urban drainage systems.
As part of its immediate action plan, the task force has directed the local government, in collaboration with the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, to commence the desilting of major drains across the country. This move is expected to enhance water flow and reduce the risk of water stagnation and overflow in flood-prone areas.
“The President, concerned about the persistent flooding not only in Accra but across the country, has set up a special task force to tackle the issue and minimize if not entirely prevent, floods, particularly within the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
“Today, the task force embarked on an aerial tour to inspect critical drainage channels that require urgent attention,” he stated.
Marietta Brew, Legal Counsel to the President, has been appointed as the Secretary to the task force. Other notable members include Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, Minister for Water Resources, Works & Housing; Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister for Local Government; DCOP Abdul Osman Razak, National Security Coordinator; and Teddy Addi, Deputy Director General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).
The team recently conducted a reconnaissance of several critical flood-prone locations, including Weija, the Sakumo Ramsar Site, and the Tema Fishing Harbour area. These assessments will inform targeted interventions and infrastructural improvements to minimize the devastating impact of floods on residents and businesses.
President Mahama’s administration remains committed to finding lasting solutions to the country’s flooding challenges through a multi-sectoral approach that emphasizes prevention, preparedness, and response.
The task force is expected to work closely with local authorities, engineering experts, and environmental agencies to ensure sustainable flood management strategies are implemented nationwide.
